Jun 14, 2017

Apple’s iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are impressive gadgets. They’re the best iPhones Apple has made so far.

Though the design hasn’t changed much, there are lots of new features to try out, like Force Touch and dual cameras. But many people don’t realise how much their iPhone can do.

Luckily, we’ve found 101 tips and tricks to make your iPhone experience even better.

Discover these clever ideas that even Apple experts often miss, and get ready to make the most of your iPhone 7 or 7 Plus.

1. How to Force a Restart

The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus doesn’t use a hard button, so the process for forcing a restart has changed.

To do this, press and hold the power button on the right-hand side of your phone, and the volume button on the left-hand side at the same time. Keep holding them down until your phone restarts and you see the Apple logo.

2. Make the Button Feel Like a Button

It looks like a button, but it doesn’t click. There’s a good reason why: your iPhone 7 and 7 Plus uses haptic feedback instead of a clicking mechanism.

That means it vibrates to mimic the feel of pressing a button. What’s cool is you can adjust the vibration intensity to suit your preference. Go to Settings, then General, and then Home Button. Here you can choose different levels of feedback.

If you want to turn it off completely, go to Settings and select Sounds & Haptics.

3. Wake Up When You Pick It Up

Thanks to the latest iOS 10 update, buttons are so last year. Your iPhone will automatically ‘wake up’ when you pick it up. This is really handy for checking notifications without having to unlock your phone.

This clever feature can save you a lot of time. Research from Deloitte shows the average person checks their smartphone 47 times a day! For those aged 18-24, it’s even higher at 74 times a day!

With this feature, you can give your thumbs a well-deserved break. If you prefer to turn it off, go to Settings, then Display & Brightness, and adjust the slider.

4. Water and Splash Resistant

While you definitely shouldn’t drop it in the toilet (yuck!), your iPhone 7 is water and splash resistant. This means it can handle accidental drops in shallow water like the toilet, bath, or swimming pool.

Apple advises against intentionally submerging your phone or using it for underwater photography. It’s designed to survive unexpected exposure to liquid.

5. Don’t Charge After It’s Wet

Although the iPhone 7 is water resistant, electricity isn’t. If there’s any moisture detected inside your handset, you’ll get a warning message. If this happens, don’t panic! Simply disconnect it from any plugs and keep it turned off until it’s completely dry.

6. Access the Camera Quickly

When you need to snap a quick photo, accessing your camera fast is essential.

The little camera icon on the lock screen has gone, but don’t worry. With your iPhone 7, just lift your phone and swipe left to access the camera instantly. Snap away!

Don’t worry, this quick access doesn’t compromise your phone’s security. Opening the camera won’t unlock your phone, keeping your private photos private.

7. Take Stunning Photos

iPhone cameras have always been great, and the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are even better.

Your camera now has a new 12MP sensor with optical image stabilization, 60% faster performance, wide color capture, and a lens that allows for 50% more light. Even in low light conditions, you’ll capture clear images.

Need to take photos in low light? Use the flash. It’s 50% brighter, reaches further, and compensates for flickering lights.

8. Take Better Selfies

The front camera has been upgraded from 5MP to 7MP, so you’ll get better selfies and FaceTime video calls.

For an even better selfie, use the volume button on your headphones. This reduces camera shake and ensures you always look your best.

9. Enhanced Live Photos

Introduced with the iPhone 6s, Live Photos turn images into short videos by capturing frames just before and after you press the shutter button.

With the iPhone 7, Live Photos are smoother thanks to improved stabilization. After taking a photo, use new editing tools to enhance it further.

Fun fact: third-party app developers can also use these editing tools, so you can download more creative tools for editing.

10. Better Instagram Photos

Instagram has updated to take advantage of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus’ improved camera and color capture capabilities.

Now you can share photos with more vivid colors thanks to enhanced color capture on Instagram. The improvements might not be immediately obvious, but compare a photo taken before the update to see the difference.

11. Capture RAW Images

If you love mobile photography, here’s a great trick for you: shoot RAW images and edit them later using an app or on your computer. This can really elevate your photography skills.

To do this, download a custom camera app like Manual. Once installed, open the app and go to Settings. Make sure ‘Save RAW + JPEG’ is enabled. The app will show a new menu at the bottom where you can choose between RAW and RAW + JPEG. It’s recommended to select RAW to save space on your device.

Now you’re all set to capture RAW images.

12. Use Depth of Field

The iPhone 7 Plus has two lenses on the back: one with a 28mm focal length and another with 56mm. This setup not only allows for zooming with less distortion but also lets you create a depth-of-field effect.

This effect keeps your subject sharp while blurring the background, known to photography enthusiasts as the bokeh effect. You can access this feature using Portrait Mode. Simply swipe to it in the camera modes carousel and let your iPhone 7 do the rest.

13. Record in 4K Resolution

Even if you don’t own a 4K TV, you can shoot videos in ultra-high-definition with your iPhone 7.

To do this, go to Settings, then Photos & Camera, and scroll down to ‘Record Video’. Here, you can choose from different resolutions, including 720p up to 4K.

Be aware that shooting in 4K uses a lot of storage space. A minute of 4K video takes up about 350MB – nearly six times more than the lowest resolution.

14. Change Panoramic Direction

Sometimes obstacles like trees or people can ruin your panoramic shot. To fix this, simply tap the arrow in the middle of your screen while in panoramic mode to change the direction.

15. Lock Camera Lens (7+ Only)

Exclusive to the iPhone 7 Plus, this feature prevents accidental switching between the two rear camera lenses, which can cause flickering in videos.

To enable this, go to Settings, then Photos & Camera, and then Record Video. You’ll find an option to toggle ‘Lock Camera Lens’.

16. Zoom with Magnifier

You can zoom in on distant objects without opening the camera app using the Magnifier feature.

Go to Settings, then General, then Accessibility, and enable Magnifier. Once activated, triple-click the Home button to use it. Use the white circle button to capture images and zoom in and out for a closer look.

If triple-clicking doesn’t activate the Magnifier, go to Settings, then General, then Accessibility, and adjust the Accessibility Shortcut to include Magnifier.

17. Take Photos While Filming

Capture photos while recording video without interrupting the recording. Simply tap the Camera Button that appears on your screen to take a picture.

18. Preserve Your Camera Settings

If you have favourite camera settings (video, square, panoramic, filters, etc.), you can save them so they’re automatically applied whenever you open your camera.

Go to Settings, then Photos & Camera, then Preserve Settings, and toggle on ‘Camera Mode’. This ensures your preferred camera settings are always ready to use.

19. Edit Memory Movies

iOS 10 creates Memories from your photos and videos so you can relive your favourite moments. Did you know you can edit these mini slideshows too?

Open Photos, go to Memories, tap on the video at the top, and tap it again to bring up controls. To start editing, tap the three horizontal lines with the circle icon in the bottom right corner.

You can then edit the Title, Music, Duration, and choose which photos and videos to include.

20. Search in Photos

Apple borrowed this useful feature from Google: searching for people, places, and things in your photo library.

Open the Photos app, tap the blue magnifying glass (search button) at the top of your screen. Use keywords like names, places, or objects to find specific images in your library.

Once you’ve found the image you want, you can do whatever you like with it.

21. Improved Sound

The decision to remove the headphone jack caused a stir, but it actually makes sense because the old jack couldn’t handle the new hi-res audio.

The speakers now have a better dynamic range, delivering twice the volume of previous iPhones. For even louder sound, try placing your iPhone in an empty glass vase or pitcher to amplify it, which is handy when entertaining friends.

22. No More Wire Tangles

Tangled wires are a pain! With Apple’s AirPods, you never have to deal with tangled wires again.

As a bonus, AirPods greatly improve sound quality. They connect automatically and can sense when you’re wearing them. When you take them out, music pauses, and they go into sleep mode to save battery.

Here’s a cool trick: double-tap to activate Siri using your headphones. Each AirPod has an accelerometer that detects when you’re talking, and a beam-forming microphone focuses on your voice while blocking out background noise.

23. Find Hidden Menus with Force Touch

Instead of just swiping, press harder on your screen to reveal hidden menus. This handy feature works with specific apps – for example, press firmly on the Instagram app icon to quickly access new posts, search, or your activity page.

You can also use Force Touch on your lock screen to preview recent messages without unlocking your phone.

24. Adjust the Flashlight

Another useful Force Touch feature you might miss: swipe to open your control panel and press firmly on the flashlight icon. This allows you to choose between low, medium, and bright light settings.

25. Start a Preset Timer Faster

Force Touch continues to be handy. Open your control panel and press firmly on the timer to start a preset timer instantly.

26. Fast Unlock with Touch ID

Sometimes you need to unlock your phone quickly without entering a passcode. Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint sensor helps you do this in a snap.

Touch ID lets you unlock your phone with a simple touch. Here’s how to set it up: Go to Settings, then General, then Accessibility. Look for the Home Button option and toggle on ‘Rest Finger to Open’. With this on, you won’t need to press the button to unlock your phone.

27. Create a Super Secure Alphanumeric Passcode

By default, iOS prompts you to use a six-digit passcode instead of the older four-digit one. For added security, you can use an alphanumeric passcode that includes both numbers and letters.

Go to Settings, then Touch ID & Passcode, Change Passcode. When prompted to enter a new passcode, tap ‘Passcode Options’ to choose a custom alphanumeric code.

28. Make Your iPhone Harder to Hack with Two-Step Verification

Protect your Apple ID by enabling two-step verification. This adds an extra layer of security to your account, which is useful for activities like shopping on iTunes or enabling iCloud.

For iOS 10.3 or later, go to Settings, [your name], Password & Security, turn on Two-Factor Authentication, and follow the prompts.

For iOS 10.2 or earlier, go to Settings, iCloud, your Apple ID, Password & Security, turn on Two-Factor Authentication, and follow the prompts.

29. Customize Your Lock Screen

With iOS 10’s updated Notifications Center, you can add useful widgets to your lock screen.

Swipe left on the home or lock screen to bring up the Today screen. Scroll to the bottom and tap ‘Edit’ to add extra widgets. You can also press down on an app; if it can be a widget, tap ‘Add Widget’ in the top-right corner.

This gives you quick access to information when you lift up your phone and swipe right.

30. Change Lock Screen Limits

Having notifications on your lock screen is convenient for quick checks, but sometimes you may want to limit what’s visible without entering your passcode.

To customise this, go to Settings, then Touch ID & Passcode. Here, disable any information you don’t want showing up on your lock screen.

31. Send Texts Without Unlocking Your Phone

Reply quickly to urgent messages without unlocking your iPhone. Thanks to the updated lock-screen widgets on your iPhone 7, you can type out your reply without needing a passcode.

To do this, firmly press on a received message, and a window will appear so you can respond quickly.

Yes, it’s a bit concerning if a ‘funny’ friend gets hold of your phone, but there are privacy measures in place. You can disable this feature so they can’t view your entire message history.

32. Send Secret Hidden Messages

You can now send super-secret hidden messages or images that only reveal themselves when the recipient taps or rubs them.

Here’s how to do it: After typing your message or selecting a photo, tap and hold the blue send arrow above the keyboard to bring up effects. Then select the Invisible Ink option.

When your recipient gets the message, they’ll have to tap it to reveal the top-secret content. After a few seconds, the message hides again to keep your secrets safe from prying eyes.

33. Text Music and Images with iMessage Apps

iMessage now features apps designed specifically for it, adding fun options like GIFs, music, and Shazam tags.

Access these apps by tapping the grey arrow on the left and then the icon resembling drawing tools. Depending on your installed apps, you can choose from a variety of options.

You can download new apps from the App Store easily by tapping the group of four smaller boxes in the bottom left of your screen.

34. Send Low-Quality Images to Save Data

If you send a lot of images through the Messages app, it can quickly use up your monthly data allowance. But you can choose to send low-quality images to save data.

Go to Settings, Messages, and tap ‘Low Quality Image’ at the bottom.

35. Disable Flashy Message Effects

If you’re not into sending messages with flashy effects or suffer from motion sickness, you can easily disable them so no balloons or confetti burst onto your screen.

Go to Settings, General, Accessibility, Reduce Motion, and turn the feature on. This disables message effects and reduces motion-based effects elsewhere on your phone.

If you don’t already send messages with these effects, they’re probably already disabled.

36. Send Handwritten Messages

Adding a personal touch to your messages is easy with handwritten messages.

When in a conversation, turn your iPhone to landscape mode and tap the handwriting button in the bottom-right corner. Write your message using your fingertip. If you run out of space, swipe left with two fingers.

Tap Done when finished, and your handwritten message will appear in the conversation.

37. Multilingual Typing

iOS 10 supports multilingual typing, allowing you to type in multiple languages at the same time.

Here’s how to set it up: Go to Settings, General, Dictionary. Select the languages you want to use with the QuickType keyboard. Once downloaded, return to General, Keyboards, Add New Keyboard, and select the languages.

With them active, you’ll get appropriate next-word suggestions for each language, and autocorrect will recognise you’re typing in a different language, so it won’t try to correct you unnecessarily.

38. Swap Words for Emojis

Sometimes emojis say it best. With iOS 10, you can swap words for emojis easily.

You have two ways to do this: tap the relevant emoji at the top of your keyboard as you type to replace a word, or compose your message first and then tap the Emoji button to replace highlighted words with emojis.

39. See When a Message Was Sent

Normally, you can only see the date and time of the first message in a conversation. But in the Messages app, swipe right to left to reveal timestamps for each individual message.

40. Disable Read Messages

We all have that one person who gets upset when they see we’ve read their message but haven’t replied instantly. Sometimes, we’re just busy, Jeff!

You can avoid this in iMessage by opting in or out of sending read receipts. These let the sender know if you’ve read their message, and you can turn this feature on or off for each conversation.

To do this, open the message window, tap the ‘i’ icon in the top right corner, and toggle Send Read Receipts off. Now you won’t have to listen to any complaints.

41. Customise Autocorrect Text Replacement

Your iOS QuickType keyboard is clever at predicting what you’re typing and correcting typos. You can customise it to understand your favourite shortcuts and abbreviations, expanding them into full words or phrases.

To set it up, go to Settings, General, Keyboard, then select Text Replacement. Tap the plus sign to add a new one. You can use this for good, like turning “WTF” into “Why The Face?” or for pranks by replacing common words with something random.

42. Quickly Add Symbols in Keyboard

Save time by quickly adding symbols without switching keyboards. Instead of tapping the 123 button, choose your symbol, and then tap ABC to return, do it in one motion!

Tap and hold the 123 button, slide your finger to select your symbol, and release. It will automatically revert to the letters keyboard.

Also, hold your finger on a symbol to reveal additional hidden symbols.

43. Add Full Stop Faster

Save time by quickly adding a full stop at the end of a word without going to the symbol menu. Just double-tap the space button. Double-tap quickly; if you pause too long between taps, it adds two spaces instead.

44. Shake Your iPhone to Undo

If you accidentally delete something important, shake your iPhone to bring up the Undo/Redo box. Alternatively, switch to landscape mode to find the undo button on the keyboard.

45. Turn Your Keyboard into a Trackpad

Easily edit text by turning your keyboard into a trackpad. Press down on the keyboard until it blanks out. Without lifting your finger, move your cursor freely. Press again to highlight a word or double-press to highlight a section.

46. Have Your Phone Read Texts to You

If reading texts is difficult or you prefer listening, have your iPhone read them aloud. Go to Settings, General, Accessibility, and switch on Speak Selection. Long-press on a message and select Speak (make sure the message content is appropriate).

47. Increase or Decrease Text Size

Adjust the text size on your screen for better readability. Go to Settings, Display & Brightness, Text Size, and adjust to your preference. Note: Only apps that support Dynamic Type will adjust.

48. Make Your iPhone 7 Flash When You Receive a Message

Make your iPhone’s flash blink when you receive notifications. Go to Settings, General, Accessibility, Hearing, and turn on LED Flash for Alerts. Useful for grabbing attention beyond vibration or sound.

49. Create Custom Ringtones and Alert Tones

Personalise your iPhone by creating custom ringtones and alert tones from your music tracks. Create a short version of your chosen track, convert it, and sync it with your iPhone. Use GarageBand to create unique tones and assign them to contacts or notifications.

50. Track Your Sleep Pattern

Use the Bedtime feature in the Clock app to track your sleep. Set your desired sleep duration and alarm times for specific days. It helps you maintain a consistent sleep schedule and ensures you get enough rest.

51. Night Shift Mode

Night Shift Mode is handy if you find your phone’s bright screen harsh on your eyes at night. It changes the screen colours to warmer tones, easing strain in low light. To activate it, go to Settings, Display & Brightness, Night Shift. You can schedule it to turn on automatically during specific times.

52. Enable Colour Filters

iOS 10 includes new colour filters to assist users with colour blindness or difficulty distinguishing colours on bright screens. Go to Settings, General, Accessibility, Display Accommodations, Colour Filters. Choose from options like Red/Green, Green/Red, Blue/Yellow Filters, or Grayscale. Adjust colour tint for the entire screen if needed.

53. Learn the Lyrics to Your Favourite Songs

With the iOS 10 Music app update, you can view song lyrics while listening. Tap the Now Playing section, then Lyrics near the bottom. Note that not all songs have lyrics available.

54. Control Media Playback

Swipe up from the bottom of your screen to access the Control Centre. Swipe left for media playback controls where you can manage music and podcasts.

55. Queue Up the Next Song

Use the Music App’s Up Next feature by force pressing on a song to bring up options like play next. This allows you to queue songs effortlessly.

56. Set Music on a Timer

Use the Clock app’s timer to stop playing music or audiobooks after a set time. Tap Timer, select duration, then tap When Timer Ends, scroll to Stop Playing.

57. Optimise Apple Music Storage

Save storage space by optimising how much storage your Music app uses. Go to Settings, Music, Optimize Storage, and choose your storage limit.

58. Quickly Manage Your iCloud Storage

Check and manage your iCloud storage quickly. Go to Settings, tap your Account ID, select iCloud to see usage details. Tap on the graph for app-specific breakdowns and management.

59. Find Outdated Apps

Identify and update outdated apps that could slow down your phone. Go to Settings, General, About, Applications. Look for a “>” next to the number of apps to find outdated ones. Tap each app to update.

60. Open App Switcher Faster

Use 3D Touch to open the App Switcher quickly. Press down on the left edge of your screen and swipe towards the centre to switch between open apps.

61. Make the Apps Come to You

If your fingers find it tricky to reach apps on the larger screens of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, there’s a neat solution. Double-tap the home button and your apps will slide down the screen for easy access.

For an extra tip, organise your apps and folders on your home screen so that the ones you use most frequently are within easy reach of your thumb. Small adjustments like this can greatly improve your user experience.

62. Customise Your App Icons

You can personalise your home screen by changing app icons, provided developers offer this option. Some apps like MLB.com At Bat and the NHL App allow you to choose icons, such as your favourite team’s logo. Hopefully, more apps will start offering this feature in the future.

63. Tap Your Way to the Top

Instead of scrolling back to the top of a page, simply tap the very top of your iPhone screen. This works in most apps and some apps even offer an undo function if you tap accidentally and lose your place.

Note: Not all apps support this feature, so try it out to see which ones do.

64. Skip Calls with Remind Me Later Option

When you’re busy and can’t take a call, you can respond with a text message using the latest iOS updates. Swipe upward on the phone icon next to the unlock slider and choose “Respond With Text” or tap the message button above the slider to answer the call.

Default options include “Sorry, I can’t talk right now,” “Can I call you later?”, and “I’m on my way,” as well as an option to enter your own message.

To customise pre-prepared messages, go to Settings, Phone, Respond With Text. You can replace one of the default options with a new one.

65. Prevent Spam Calls

To block spam calls, download an app like Hiya from the App Store. Go to Settings, Phone, Call Blocking and Identification to manage your spam-blocking apps.

66. Call Uber in Maps

Use Maps to call an Uber or other ridesharing services. Search for your destination in Maps, then tap “Get Directions” and select “Get a Ride.” You can choose from supported ridesharing apps.

67. Get Weather Report in Maps

With iOS 10, you can check the weather without leaving Maps. Use 3D Touch on the temperature to see a 7-hour forecast pop-up. Press harder to view the full forecast in the Weather app for that location.

Unfortunately, teleportation to your destination isn’t quite available yet!

68. Pay with Your iPhone

Apple Pay lets you pay by tapping your iPhone at NFC terminals. Set it up by launching the Wallet app and adding your payment cards. You can also use Apple Pay within Safari on participating websites.

69. Save Battery Power

If you’re out for the day without your charger, or if you need to conserve battery, use Low Power Mode. It reduces power consumption by disabling certain features like Siri and background app refresh. Your screen will also dim faster when inactive.

To enable Low Power Mode, go to Settings, Battery, Low Power Mode.

70. Show Battery Percentage

To easily keep track of your battery life, enable the battery percentage indicator. This shows the exact percentage of battery remaining in the top right corner of your screen.

To do this, go to Settings, General, Usage, and toggle on Battery Percentage.

71. Identify Battery Draining Apps

You can find out which apps are using a lot of your battery power. Keep in mind that just because an app uses a lot of battery doesn’t mean it’s a problem—it could be because you use it frequently.

To check, go to Settings, General, Usage, Battery Usage.

72. Charge Your Phone Faster

Need your phone to charge quickly? Enable Flight Safe Mode. This turns off features that drain your battery, speeding up the charging process. It won’t make a huge difference, but every bit helps.

73. iPhone Not Charging? Try This

If your iPhone isn’t charging properly with the Lightning cable, lint may be the issue. Use a toothpick to gently clean the charging port.

74. Save Data by Limiting App Access

To conserve mobile data, choose which apps can use it. Go to Settings, Mobile Data, and toggle apps to Wi-Fi only.

75. Wi-Fi Troubleshooting

If you have Wi-Fi connection problems, iOS now helps troubleshoot. Look for an exclamation mark over the Wi-Fi icon, then go to Settings to find tips like restarting your router.

76. Improve Phone Signal with Hidden Mode

Improve your iPhone’s signal by accessing Field Mode. Dial 3001#12345# and press call to launch this hidden tool, which displays signal strength numerically.

77. Search the Web Faster

Save time when searching the web by holding down the full stop icon to access shortcut URL suffixes (.com, .co.uk, etc.).

Siri can solve math problems for you. Just ask Siri to perform calculations, whether they’re simple or complex.

84. Correct Siri’s Punctuation

If Siri mispronounces a name, say “That’s not how you pronounce…” Siri will ask for the correct pronunciation and then confirm if it’s right.

85. Make Siri Respond Faster

Hold down the Home button while speaking to Siri and release it when you’re done. This speeds up Siri’s response time.

86. Use iPhone as a Spirit Level

Open the Compass app and swipe left to access a spirit level. Use this feature to ensure surfaces like shelves are level.

87. Save PDFs to iBooks

Turn web pages into PDFs and save them in iBooks by tapping Share, scrolling to Save PDF to iBooks, and tapping it.

88. Collaborate on Notes

Share and collaborate on Notes with others by tapping the circle icon with a head and plus sign, then selecting share options.

89. Make iPhone 7 Kid-Friendly

Set restrictions in the Settings to control what kids can access on your iPhone. Disable features, restrict app installations, and set content limits.

90. Use Apple ID Without a Credit Card
