Most People Measure Their Laptops Incorrectly
If you need to know the dimensions of your laptop computer, close your device and measure it diagonally from corner to corner. To completely understand the size of your laptop, you’ll also need to measure the height, width, and depth.
Official dimensions posted online or on the packaging often will refer to the screen size, not the size of the device. It’s important to get the precise measurements before buying a laptop sleeve to ensure the right fit.
Your laptop sleeve, or any other type of carrying case, should be slightly bigger than your laptop to avoid a tight squeeze and properly protect your device.
At Custom Logo Cases, we’ve put together some simple instructions that will help ensure you measure the dimensions of your laptop accurately and easily.
Let’s get started.
How Do I Check What Size My Laptop Is?
When you need to know the exact size of your laptop computer, you shouldn’t follow the official measurements found online. That’s because these typically include the screen only, not the bezel, which is the casing that frames the screen.
According to HP, the average laptop screen size ranges from:
- 11-12 inches for ultraportable laptops.
- 13-14 inches for light laptops.
- 15-16 inches for standard laptops.
However, as we mentioned, these measurements do not include the bezel but the screen only. While different laptops will have different bezel sizes, this element can add up to an inch to your laptop’s measurements. This will make a significant difference when purchasing the right laptop sleeve.
So, before buying a laptop sleeve or case, use a tape measure or ruler and measure the true dimensions of your laptop in inches.
What Is the Dimension of a Laptop?
Whether you use a MacBook, Chromebook, Dell, or other type of laptop, there are four dimensions that will be relevant when measuring your device for a laptop sleeve or case. Here’s what they are and how to measure them:
1. Diagonal
The most important dimension to know when measuring your device. With your laptop closed, the diagonal runs across the surface from the top left corner to the lower right, or from the top right corner to the lower left. Place a tape measure or ruler at the edge of one of these corners and measure to the opposite corner.
2. Height
When facing a closed laptop, this dimension runs from the edge closest to you to the edge furthest away from you. It will always be a shorter measurement than the width. Place the tape measure or ruler at the edge closest to you, and measure perpendicularly to the edge of the laptop furthest from you.
3. Width
If you’re facing your device, this measurement runs across the surface of your laptop from the left edge to the right edge, or vice versa. With your laptop lid closed, place the tape measure or ruler at one of these edges and measure across to the opposite edge. This measurement will always be longer than the height.
4. Depth
This is the thickness of your laptop. With your laptop closed, measure from the top surface of your device to the bottom. If your laptop is an older, heavier model or is designed to be rugged, such as a laptop used at a construction site, your laptop may have significantly more depth than a newer, sleeker model.
Important note: Once you’ve measured your device accurately, it’s important to add a few centimeters or an inch to each dimension to ensure the laptop comfortably fits in the sleeve or case. For the depth, add half an inch to ensure the laptop fits snugly but not tightly. You want to ensure the sleeve is big enough to cover your laptop entirely, and you don’t want it to be too tight or too loose.
How Do I Check My Screen Size?
If you need to know just the size of your laptop screen, open your laptop and measure diagonally from the top right corner of your screen to the bottom left, or from the bottom left corner to the top right.
Remember that this measurement does not include the bezel, which may add up to an inch to the laptop’s diagonal, height, and width measurements. Since the bezel can vary in size depending on the laptop make and model, this measurement won’t help you choose the correct laptop sleeve for your device.
However, there may be other reasons why you would need to measure your laptop screen. For example, you may want to purchase a privacy screen or list your laptop for sale online, as this is generally the measurement used when buying and selling laptops.
Why Do I Need a Laptop Sleeve?
All laptops should have a sleeve for maximum protection. Even if you use a laptop case, such as a specialized bag, or carry your device in a backpack with a dedicated compartment, using a laptop sleeve adds an extra buffer between your laptop and scratches, collision damage like drops and dings, and liquid damage, such as from rain or a leaking water bottle.
Similar to smartphones and tablets, laptops are an expensive investment. While these devices are designed for mobility it can be easy to forget they are also delicate electronic devices. An accident can lead to lost data, missed deadlines for school or work, and expensive and inconvenient repairs.
A laptop sleeve can help ensure your device has a healthy lifespan and that you get the most from your investment.
