Printing Methods and Processes – An explanation and guide to popular print processes UK

When it comes to customising phone cases, tablet covers, and other promotional items, choosing the right printing method can make a significant difference in both the appearance and durability of your designs. At CustomLogoCases, we offer a range of printing techniques to suit various needs, each with its own unique benefits and applications. Whether you’re looking for vibrant colours, intricate details, or a subtle branded touch, understanding the different printing methods available will help you make an informed decision for your project. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the most common printing methods we use and their respective advantages.

Screen Printing – What is Screen Printing?

Screen printing, or silk screen printing as it’s also known, is a method where a mesh stencil is used to transfer ink onto a substrate, such as apparel and other soft materials. For each colour in the design, a separate mesh stencil is created and aligned precisely on the item. Ink is then pushed through the stencil using a blade or squeegee, usually with two strokes: the first to fill the mesh and the second to push the ink onto the material.

Screen printing is ideal for larger prints compared to other methods like pad printing, and it allows for precise colour matching to Pantone shades. However, this manual method requires great attention to detail and is best suited for those with experience in printing.

At CustomLogoCases, we primarily use screen printing for logo application on phone and tablet cases. This method is perfect for logos with up to four colours and block colours, though it cannot handle gradients. The inks used are specifically designed for textiles, ensuring durability without fading, scratching, or peeling.

UV Printing – What is Digital UV Printing?

UV printing is a modern technique involving a special printer and UV inks, which are cured instantly with ultraviolet (UV) light. This rapid curing process prevents the ink from spreading, resulting in exceptionally precise prints.

One of the main benefits of UV printing is its quick turnaround time, as there’s no drying period. This method works on a range of substrates, whether flat, textured, or rounded. For instance, when printing on darker PU leather, a primer may be necessary to achieve vibrant colours that aren’t dulled by the background.

UV printing produces durable results that resist fading and scratching. Additionally, UV inks are non-solvent based, making them better for both health and the environment.

This method is ideal for complex images or designs, especially those with gradients or fine details. However, achieving exact colour matches can be more challenging compared to screen printing.

At CustomLogoCases, we use UV printing for intricate logos and designs on phone cases, ensuring high-quality results.

Pad Printing

Pad printing involves a machine and a silicone pad, which is dipped in ink and then pressed onto the object to transfer the design. This method can handle both 2D and 3D objects, making it suitable for items with complex shapes or uneven surfaces.

Pad printing excels in detailed printing and is often used for items like water bottles, pens, and golf balls. The inks can be colour-matched and, depending on their type, can be very durable. This process is cost-effective for larger quantities but is generally better suited for certain shapes rather than flat surfaces.

Sublimation Printing

Sublimation printing, also known as dye-sublimation, is a process where a design is printed onto special transfer paper and then applied to the object using heat. This method allows for full-colour, high-quality images on various materials and shapes.

Sublimation is excellent for complex designs and smaller quantities, as it avoids the expense of producing print films and the setup costs of screen printing. However, it can be relatively costly for larger volumes and is unsuitable for materials that cannot withstand high temperatures.

At CustomLogoCases, we use sublimation printing for custom phone cases, offering 3D wrapped designs or 2D back plates. It’s also used for custom neoprene laptop sleeves, where unique background colours or complex designs are required.

Embossing and Debossing (and Foil)

Although not strictly a printing method, embossing and debossing often come up in discussions about branding merchandise like cases and sleeves. These processes involve using a moulded metal plate to press a logo or design into a substrate, such as leather or PU leather.

Embossing creates an indented design, while debossing raises the design above the surface. These techniques offer a subtle branding approach, which some brands prefer.

Embossing can be done as a blind emboss (without colour) or with foil embossing, which adds a foil layer in colours like gold or silver for a striking effect.

While embossing is subtle and elegant, it may not stand out as much as other methods, and it’s not suitable for harder or thicker items like gel cases.

Which Printing Method to Choose for Your Project?

At CustomLogoCases, our most commonly used methods are screen printing, UV printing, sublimation printing, and embossing. When evaluating a project, we consider factors such as:

  • The quantity required
  • The complexity and colours of the logo or design
  • The type of product
  • The surface or material of the product

We provide tailored advice on the best printing or embossing method for each project and may even test multiple methods to achieve the optimal result at no extra cost. Our goal is to deliver the highest quality possible.
