How to Choose the Right Chinese Manufacturer for Your Business: Requesting Product Samples
If you’re considering partnering with a Chinese manufacturer, the best way to ensure they’re a good fit for your business is to request a product sample. A sample is designed to showcase the appearance, function, and quality of the supplier’s final product once it goes into production. Having a sample can give you peace of mind, as it lets you see what the product will look like before you commit to a larger order. Depending on the type of product you’re after, receiving a satisfactory sample can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months. Not every manufacturer will meet your needs or requirements, so it’s wise to contact multiple suppliers and request samples from more than one to compare and contrast.
Here’s a guide to the different types of product samples you can request and how to choose the right manufacturer for your needs.
Types of Product Samples
1. Manufacturer Samples
If you want to assess the quality of a factory’s products, a manufacturer sample is what you need. These samples can be invaluable when evaluating different companies, as they demonstrate whether the manufacturer has the capability to produce a high-quality product. However, bear in mind that an impressive factory sample doesn’t guarantee they can handle customised production lines in the future.
There are two main types of manufacturer samples: previous batch or production samples and material samples.
- Previous Batch or Production Samples
These samples come from products previously made by the manufacturer that weren’t customised to any specific design requirements. They’re useful for testing product functionality or assessing quality. Keep in mind that these samples might not fully represent what your customised product will look like.
- Material Samples
If you’re launching an apparel line or any product involving fabric, you’ll want to request material samples. Suppliers can send you swatches, sandwich cards, hanging samples, or other types. Some suppliers provide these for free, but you might need to cover shipping costs, often via DHL or another international courier from China to the UK.
2. Private Label or Prototype Samples
If you want to customise an existing product under your own brand, you should consider talking to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) or suppliers who offer private label or prototype samples. Ordering these samples allows you to see if the manufacturer can meet your specific requirements. To get it right first time, provide clear and detailed product specifications before they start working on the sample. Be prepared for additional costs, as the manufacturer may need to create a custom mould, graphic designs, special packaging, and other custom elements. Avoid leaving decisions about materials and components to the manufacturer, as they might opt for the cheapest options to reduce costs. If the private label sample meets your expectations, you can be confident they understand your needs before full-scale production begins.
Regardless of the product you’re planning to manufacture, requesting a sample before placing a large production order is always a good idea. Seeing the sample in person ensures it meets your expectations and helps you make a well-informed investment.
